Money sent into Bangladesh by a worker abroad is inward remittance. Foreign currency bought or sent out for a trip is an outward travel transaction. They are not one allowance. Bangladesh Bank permits inward remittance through banks and approved exchange houses 1. A resident traveller uses the separate annual foreign-exchange entitlement, now US$18,000 per adult, with a US$5,000 cap on dollar notes 2,3. Tuition payments and some tour-package payments have their own documented rules 4,5.

Inward remittance is money coming home

Bangladesh Bank permits banks to maintain drawing arrangements with foreign banks and exchange houses so Bangladeshis abroad can send earnings into their own or a nominated person's Bangladesh account 1.

Use a listed bank or exchange house and keep the transfer reference. A transfer into Bangladesh does not by itself create extra personal travel quota for the recipient.

Travel entitlement is money for a trip

The travel entitlement is foreign exchange an authorised dealer can release to a resident Bangladeshi traveller. Bangladesh Bank raised the adult annual amount to US$18,000 on 6 September 2026 2.

Dollar notes remain capped at US$5,000, and the rest can be other currency or card value 2,3. The bank records the release under the travel rules.

Study payments follow a separate file

An authorised dealer can send documented tuition, living and required insurance costs for a recognised overseas course 4. Since August 2026, designated education-card transactions are expressly outside the travel quota 4.

The student can still use the unused personal travel entitlement for departure money under the one-way study rule 3. Institution fees and personal travel cash should remain separate in the budget.

Tour packages have two official routes

The older tour-operator rule lets a traveller buy a package worth up to 90% of the annual travel entitlement through a TOAB member firm, with passport endorsement against the package invoice 6.

A 9 August 2026 circular created a separate tour-operator remittance facility up to US$3,000 per traveller outside annual travel quota, backed by an overseas invoice, itinerary, traveller list and proof of taka collection 5. Ask the operator and bank which route the invoice uses.

Cash crossing the border

A departing passenger can carry up to Tk10,000 in Bangladesh notes 3. The foreign-currency cash rule is different, with no more than US$5,000 in US-dollar notes released within the travel entitlement 2,3.

Account balances, card limits, travel entitlement and cash declaration are separate controls. Ask the authorised dealer and customs about the exact source and amount before travel.
